Subsidy pot for electric vans isn't running out, but the share of EV and PHEV vans is growing slowly.
The subsidy pot for electric vans just won't run dry. This is evident from figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Despite the available subsidies, the share of electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vans is growing only slowly.
RVO data shows that 1,200 electric vans have been sold so far in 2024. That is an increase compared to previous years, but the total share remains small. By comparison, over 40,000 diesel vans were registered in the same period.
According to industry association BOVAG, the limited range and high purchase price of electric vans are major barriers for entrepreneurs. The lack of charging infrastructure also plays a role. The government hopes to encourage the switch with subsidies, but so far the effect remains limited.
Despite substantial subsidies and tax benefits, sales of electric vans are lagging. The higher purchase price deters many entrepreneurs, especially now that diesel fuel costs are relatively stable. The limited range and lack of fast-charging options on business parks also make the switch less attractive. In addition, uncertainty about residual value plays a role: no one knows exactly what a used electric van will be worth in five years. Especially in the heavier segment, where long trips and full loads are normal, diesel remains the first choice for now.
