The Ford Transit is known as a robust workhorse, but like any vehicle it has specific points of attention. Anyone wanting to sell their Transit does well to know them, although they need not stand in the way of a smooth sale.
With regular maintenance, Transit diesels often reach 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres without major overhauls. The 2.0 TDCi engines (both the 85 kW and more powerful variants) excel in durability. It is crucial that the timing belt is replaced on time and oil changes are strictly followed. A well-documented service history also significantly increases the resale value.
In practice we see a few recurring issues. Rust formation on the sills, wheel arches and the underside of the sliding doors is a known phenomenon, especially on intensively used examples. In addition, injectors of the common-rail diesel engine can cause problems over time, leading to irregular idling or loss of power. The EGR valve becomes clogged with many short trips and can cause faults. The gearbox (especially the six-speed manual) sometimes shows wear on the synchromesh at high mileages. These problems may sound worrying, but for us they are known factors that we include in our valuation. You can simply sell your Transit, even with these points of attention.
