Frequently asked questions
The Opel Movano has been on the market since 1998 and is now in its third generation. For a quick sale, it's useful to know which version you have, as that largely determines the value and interest from buyers or trade-in companies.
The first Movano was a joint venture with Renault and shared technology with the Renault Master. Engines were the 2.2 DTI, 2.5 D and 2.8 DTI. Reliable workhorses, but nowadays less sought after due to age. A well-maintained example can still fetch a surprisingly high bid.
In 2006, Opel switched to the Fiat Ducato platform. The Movano received a completely new design and was available as a panel van, chassis cab, double cab and combi. Popular engine: the 2.3 CDTI, later supplemented by the 2.2 D. The second generation had two facelifts: in 2010 (new front and interior) and 2014 (Euro 6 engines). Note: models from 2014 onwards are often more interesting for export due to low-emission zones.
The latest Movano again shares technology, now with the Citroën Jumper and Peugeot Boxer. The design is sleeker, the engines are exclusively 2.2-litre diesels with AdBlue, and there is an electric variant for the first time (Movano-e). The equipment is modern with driver assistance systems, digital dashboard and connected services.
The Movano comes in three lengths (L1, L2, L3) and three roof heights (H1, H2, H3). There are also special variants such as the double cab (second row of seats), combi (passenger transport), chassis cab (for conversions) and the popular camper base. The panel van is also available with single or double cab.
Many Belgian companies choose the L2H2 or L3H2 because they offer the best balance between load volume and manoeuvrability. The Movano with double cab is popular with construction companies and courier services that travel with a team.
The reliability of the Opel Movano is generally above average for a large van. However, there are typical points of attention that you as a seller should take into account, as they can affect the value of your vehicle.
With the 2.3 CDTI engine, injector problems can occur, especially at high mileages. A smoking exhaust or irregular idling are signs. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of the fuel filter prevents expensive repairs. The turbo is robust, but changing the oil on time is crucial. Also check the multi-rib belt: with poor maintenance it can break and cause engine damage.
Rust occurs sporadically, particularly on the sills and rear doors of the first model year of the second generation. Always check the underbody and wheel arches on an older Movano.
A complete maintenance history increases the confidence of buyers and trade-in companies. Make sure you can present invoices and the service booklet. For a valid sale in Belgium, a valid inspection certificate (not older than 2 months) is required for vehicles older than 4 years. A Movano with a recent major service (timing belt, brakes, tyres) often receives a higher bid.
With proper care, a Movano easily reaches high mileages. Parts are readily available and relatively affordable. The Fiat Ducato technology means that many garages and parts suppliers are familiar with this technology, a plus for ease of maintenance.
If you want to sell your Opel Movano, you can significantly increase its resale value with a few simple steps. A trade-in buyer looks beyond just the model and year of manufacture.
Make sure all vehicle documents are present: registration certificate, inspection certificate, service booklet and invoices. Never simply accept a missing history; a trade-in buyer pays less when documentation has gaps.
Have the Movano thoroughly cleaned, both inside and out. Dirt can hide small defects but also gives the impression of careless maintenance. Pay attention to the load area: a clean and tidy floor makes a professional impression.
Check in advance that all lights, wipers, air conditioning, cruise control and other options work. A faulty air conditioning can indicate an expensive leak. Small repairs (bulbs, wiper blades) often pay for themselves in a higher bid.
Tyres with sufficient tread (at least 3 mm) and well-functioning brakes are a sign of safe use. Worn tyres can make a trade-in buyer suspect other deferred maintenance.
It's best to report dents, scratches or paint damage in advance. A trade-in buyer will discover them anyway and appreciates transparency. Moreover, a small investment in dent removal or polishing can improve the appearance and increase the value.
A high mileage is not a disaster for a Movano, as long as maintenance has been carried out proportionately. Proof of regular oil changes and preventive replacement of parts counts heavily. Explain whether the vehicle mainly did motorway miles or lots of city driving; the latter means more wear on the clutch and brakes.
