Sell your Nissan Primastar

The Nissan Primastar has been a fixture in the Belgian commercial vehicle landscape for years. Originally developed as part of a collaboration between Nissan, Renault and Opel, the Primastar shares its platform with the Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro. The first generation appeared in 2001 and quickly became popular with couriers, construction companies and installers. The combination of a robust build, relatively low maintenance costs and practical loading characteristics makes the Primastar a popular work van.

Later, a second generation followed, which was sold briefly as the Nissan NV300 from 2014, before eventually returning to the Primastar name. This badge engineering means that parts are widely available and many garages are familiar with the technology. This makes the Primastar not only popular on the road, but also interesting on the second-hand market. Especially in Belgium, with its many SMEs and self-employed people, demand for a used Primastar remains strong. Whether you drive hundreds of kilometres a day or only use the vehicle for short distances, it proves its usefulness time and again.

First generation (2001-2014)

The original Primastar was offered as a closed van and as a combi version for passenger transport. Engines were mainly diesels: 1.9 dCi (later 2.0 dCi) with outputs from 80 to 140 hp. There were two wheelbases and several roof heights. Even first-generation examples can still fetch a decent sum if they are well maintained, because for start-up entrepreneurs it is an affordable work van.

Second generation (2014-2020), also as Nissan NV300

The successor was sold for a short time as the Nissan NV300, but technically everything remained very recognisable. The 2.0 dCi engine received updates to meet stricter emission standards. The interior became more modern and ride comfort increased. Important for sellers: this generation is still very active on the road, so parts supply is excellent. The residual value of a good NV300 or second-generation Primastar is higher than that of its predecessor, although mileage plays a major role.

Current generation (2020-present)

The latest Primastar is essentially a facelifted version of the second generation, but with a sleeker design and extra safety equipment. For the first time, there is also a fully electric variant, the Nissan Primastar e-TECH. If you want to sell a recent Primastar, you benefit from strong demand on the used car market. The electric version is still rare and can appeal to a niche audience of buyers.

The value of a used Nissan Primastar depends on a range of objective factors. The better you understand them, the more realistic your expectations. The key parameters at a glance:

• Year and mileage: That goes without saying, but note: lower mileage is only worth more if the service history supports it. A young Primastar with extremely high mileage can fetch less than a slightly older one with demonstrably lower wear.
• Service history: Vehicles with a fully stamped service book, preferably from an authorized dealer, are significantly more valuable. Regular oil changes and timely replacement of the timing belt (or chain) are points of attention.
• Trim and equipment: A combi with more seats or a more luxurious Acenta/Tekna trim with air conditioning, cruise control and parking sensors brings more than a bare base version. The presence of a tow bar or roof rack can be a plus for certain buyers.
• Damage and interior condition: A frayed driver's seat or a damaged load floor lower the price. External parking damage or rust around the wheel arches can easily cost you tens of percent.
• Euro emission standard: In low-emission zones (LEZ) in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent, the Euro class is decisive. Euro 5 models have lower demand than Euro 6. You see that immediately in the offered prices.
• Market demand for specific configurations: L2H2 versions (long wheelbase, high roof) with double cab are, for example, sought after in certain sectors. If your Primastar is in a region with many SMEs, that can also affect the price.

Buyers looking for a Primastar pay attention to several technical weaknesses known for this model. As a seller, you do well to know these, so you are not surprised during an inspection.

• Engine and injectors: On the 2.0 dCi, faulty injectors can occur, leading to rough running or smoke. EGR valves and turbos also suffer from fouling over time. Regular maintenance is the best prevention here.
• Particulate filter: Especially with city use, the diesel particulate filter can become saturated. If the filter has been cleaned or replaced, mention that.
• Electronics and comfort systems: Air conditioning condensers sometimes leak, and window mechanisms can stick. Check that all on-board functions work correctly.
• Suspension and brakes: Overloading can cause the rear suspension to wear faster. Listen for abnormal noises and check tire wear.
• Bodywork: Typical rust spots are the lower edge of the sliding doors, the rear fenders and around the fuel filler cap. Peeling paint on the hood also occurs.

The Nissan Primastar, Renault Trafic and Opel Vivaro are technically almost identical. Yet you see subtle price differences on the second-hand market. The Trafic has greater name recognition and is therefore often more expensive to buy, but the Primastar and Vivaro often offer better value for money as used vehicles. For a seller, this means: don't be surprised if the offer on your Primastar is slightly lower than on a similar Trafic. That has more to do with market perception than technical quality. Buyers who are aware of this deliberately choose a Primastar because they get a younger or better-maintained vehicle for the same money. If your vehicle is in good condition, you can find a buyer just as easily. Especially if you choose a buyer who can properly assess the value of the model.
